Recommending Luna

Given the range of study-based scenarios where Luna may be helpful, it is thought that a recommendation for Luna could be made in many sections of the needs assessment report. However, we anticipate that recommendations are more likely to be successful when Luna is recommended in section B-2-7 of the report, to help with examinations and timed assessments. It is also expected that there will then need to be confirmation that the student has to sit exams or timed assessments for their course.

To help with writing a recommendation, the following can be tailored to suit most students:

Using Luna, students can quickly convert their learning material into a number of flashcards with short answer or true/false question types without having to manually write or type these out, saving considerable time and energy and removing any barriers to learning caused by difficulties with handwriting/typing speed, attention, motivation, anxiety or low mood.

After creating the flashcards, Luna creates a customised revision schedule to prompt the student when they need to review each card in order to be ready for their exam or assessment. The schedule adjusts for different learning profiles and so offers more tailored plans for students who struggle to memorise information. After carrying out these reviews, students are provided with a confidence rating for the cards they are learning, helping to maintain motivation and show the progress being made.

Additionally, we have received feedback that Student Finance England has queried recommendations for Luna when either Scholarcy or Present Pal are also recommended, seeing these as duplications of support. As such, the following additions may reduce the likelihood of this happening:

Please note, Luna does not duplicate the support provided by Scholarcy. Scholarcy summarises a research paper or article into a number of different sections, which it terms 'flashcards'. These sections include key concepts, the abstract, a synopsis, a list of highlights from the paper and a summary. Scholarcy ‘flashcards’ are therefore not the traditional flashcards that Luna creates, which provide questions to answer in order to learn a subject for an exam or assessment. Additionally, Scholarcy does not create a personalised learning schedule or provide feedback about the user’s confidence level for the content they are learning.

Please note, Luna does not duplicate the support provided by Present Pal. Present Pal enables the user to add prompts and further information to help when giving a presentation. These prompts are presented in what are termed ‘interactive flashcards’ but these are not the traditional flashcards that Luna creates, which provide questions to answer in order to learn a subject for an exam or assessment. Additionally, Present Pal does not create a personalised learning schedule or provide feedback about the user’s confidence level for the content they are learning.

Scholarcy summarises a research paper or article into a number of different sections, which it terms 'flashcards'. These sections include key concepts, the abstract, a synopsis, a list of highlights from the paper and a summary. Present Pal meanwhile enables the user to add prompts and further information to help when giving a presentation. These prompts are presented in what are termed ‘interactive flashcards’. Neither the Scholarcy or Present Pal ‘flashcards’ are similar to Luna flashcards, which provide questions to answer in order to learn a subject for an exam or assessment. Additionally, neither Scholarcy or Present Pal also create a personalised learning schedule or provide feedback about the user’s confidence level for the content they are learning.

Luna vs Quizlet & Anki

As with many recommendations, the funding body may wish to know why other options may not be suitable, and especially may query why Quizlet and/or Anki would not be sufficient as they both provide free options.
